Blog Social networking

If I were to walk down a street in Manhattan asking everyone I passed if they had accounts on any form of social networking platform, I guarantee at least 80 percent would admit to having several profiles. This is because we are living in the age where social networking is at its peak. Social networking is a way for humans to interact with each other digitally using cellphone applications or websites. Some of the prominent social networking platforms are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, just to name a few. So many people worldwide take advantage of these websites and apps because of how easy and convenient it is. However, there are some negative aspects attached with social networking as well.

Establishing a relationship with someone and maintaining it is something that individuals work very hard to do. Social networking sites make this process manageable. For instance, through the use of social networking platforms you can connect and keep in contact with family members who live in a different state or country. Social networking sites also allow us to talk to and associate with people who share the same beliefs as us. It enables us to regain lost friendships and keep in touch. Using these platforms in this manner can be classified as recreational usage. Different ways to take advantage of social networking is for corporate use. Sites such as LinkedIn make it easier for companies to locate qualified professionals to recruit. People can use LinkedIn to post relevant work experience and explain their goals in their career. Social networking has drastically changed the way recruiting takes place. Not only is it easier for job hunters to market themselves but it is easier for companies looking to hire.

The "dark side" of social networking has to do with privacy. In all forms of social networking platforms the user is required to share personal information. For many users this isn't a problem but the issue lies in who can access that information. For example, Randi Zuckerberg had an issue with privacy. She posted a picture of her family online and was shocked to see that someone who wasn't her "friend" had access to that photo. The problem she had is the same problem many have today. The topic of privacy is just one part of the "dark side" of social networking sites. In "Antisocial Networking?" Hilary Stout explains another point. She mentioned how social networking may cause people to become less genuine and intimate because of less face-to-face interactions. All in all, social networking has proved to be an essential tool for all of us. Despite the few negative aspects that it brings us we are certain it is something we couldn't live without. I believe that there will be few advancements in the times coming. We have already accomplished so much technologically it is difficult to envision something new for the future. However, I would like to see a change in how people can access other users personal information. Maybe in the future a user will be notified each time his/hers photos or posts are being used for other accounts unfamiliar to them.
