One thing about new media that is so thrilling is that we are capable of linking and connecting with so many people. We can create accounts, post on them, and have many different people notice us for what we chose to upload. This is a remarkable feature new media permits us to have. However, we have to be aware that what we post online may not be private, and it may stay online forever. People who we don’t know have the potential of accessing what we post and using it however they please. This is a realization we have to understand before committing to any social media site. Another thing we have to get used to is that whatever confidential information we provide may not stay confidential. Companies such as Facebook and Google have been known to use the confidential information of its customers to gain further information as to what their users’ preferences are. In none of these cases were these companies given consent to do what they did. Unfortunately, things like this are still occurring. The most we can do as users of new media is continue to be responsible with what we choose to upload.

  1. Hi Deshawn,

The emergence of new media in our society has definitely brought forth amazing changes in our day to day lives, including the incredible connectivity we now have as a society. However, the points you made showcasing the possible negatives this vast connectivity brings is very important to talk about. When you mentioned the posts you make being accessed by people you don't even know, I began to recall the countless stories of people getting denied from colleges and jobs because of social media posts. Posts that were meant for your friends could be deemed inappropriate by an institution like a college, and could possibly be accessed by them, causing possible drastic consequences like your dismissal. I also agree that it now seems like we just need to accept that the "confidential" information we have on Facebook, Google, etc. will be sold to third party companies and will be used to learn more about user preferences (to "help" with advertisements).
